Nicaragua doctor works double duty
LEÓN, NICARAGUA―It is inspiring to see people follow through on Jesus’ teachings. Dr. Marwel Garcia, Luke Society ministry director from León, Nicaragua, provides us with an enthusiastic example as he gives of himself to help others.
Dr. Marwel grew up in a challenging home situation in a small town in Nicaragua. He worked hard and became a pediatrician where he now spends his mornings caring for sick children in the local hospital.
The inspiring part of Dr. Marwel’s story is that he saves up large portions of his own salary to fulfill the calling God has placed on his heart — to minister to a nearby community which has very little resources. Dr. Marwel spent his own money to build a clinic building in this poor community in León, and he gives of his time each afternoon to care for the sick and hurting. Patients to Dr. Marwel’s clinic are greeted with his jovial personality and Dr. Marwel is deeply loved by the community he serves.
Since partnering with the Luke Society, Dr. Marwel has added dental services and a pharmacy. The Luke Society helped with equipment for a laboratory and some other small projects. Each additional service helps the community.
Please pray for Dr. Marwel as he is waiting for government approval for his lab and pharmacy. Once these have passed inspection, services can be opened to more than just the clinic patients, which should create additional revenue and help lead to self-sustainability. Pray for ongoing strength for Dr. Marwel as he gives so much of himself to help the hurting in Nicaragua.
