Conflict in Asia tests Myanmar

The struggle to procure food and medical supplies continues in Myanmar’s current political situation.

MATUPI, MYANMAR—War seems to be on people’s minds these days. The conflict in Ukraine has reminded us of the devastating impact war has on people. We continue to pray for peace in Europe.

Let us also not forget other conflicts happening around the world such as in Myanmar. Early in 2021, after an election in the Asian country, the military took control of the government through a coup. There has been strong opposition by local militias called the People’s Defence Force. This conflict has led to a civil war as the PDF organizes protests and attacks military convoys. The government has retaliated by torturing and killing civilians and burning villages and churches.

A humanitarian crisis has unfolded as people have fled their villages for the jungles. Others have attempted to cross the border into India. The poverty rate has doubled as food is difficult to secure and unemployment has skyrocketed. Banks, government offices and schools have been closed for almost two years, which is sure to impact living conditions for years to come.

The Luke Society’s ministry director in Myanmar — his name redacted for security reasons — calls these “dark days.” Supplies and medication are almost impossible to get for his clinic. Even if they are secured, they are difficult to transport as roads are closed. Yet, he writes, “The clinic continues to serve the community by providing medicines and health care as much as possible. We give thanks to the Lord for letting us continue the ministry in this difficult time.”

Please pray for the people of Myanmar. Pray that the Luke Society clinic may remain open to assist the hurting and vulnerable. Pray for an end to this conflict and for God’s purposes to be accomplished.
