Assurance in the midst of uncertainty
Dr. Yeny Agila teaches children in Dos de Mayo, a project in Quininde, Ecuador, where gang violence has broken out.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” ― John 16:33
If major news networks chose to reach out to our Luke Society ministry directors, they would have no difficulty finding disturbing stories that would be top contenders for their daily headlines.
Two weeks ago, rival gang warfare erupted in Dos de Mayo, a community in Ecuador where Dr. Yeny Agila de Pinos works with children at risk. A 13-year-old girl who attended the children’s program was murdered. Similarly, Haiti continues to struggle with violence from criminal gangs. Dr. Erol Rene has been unable to drive to the capital, Port au Prince, for several years due to gangs who control major roads, kidnap travelers for ransom or even kill fellow citizens without remorse. Wars have continued for several years in Luke Society locations in Cameroon, Myanmar and Ukraine, while jihadist violence has become increasingly common in north African countries.
Luke Society directors are living in times of trial and uncertainty, putting them at risk of discouragement. In John 16:33, Jesus warned His disciples to expect trials that would scatter them as they followed His example. His warnings were not meant to discourage them but to prepare them.
In the midst of chaos, we pray for God to intervene. We pray for His justice and restoration.
In this Easter season, we are again reminded that we have reason to be hopeful, even when conditions seem wildly out of control. Our confidence is restored as we again celebrate the sacrificial love of our Savior who endured undeserved hatred, corrupt trials, humiliating beatings and the curse of crucifixion so He could embrace us as His adopted children.
Pray for each Luke Society ministry team to remain unshaken in their faith, at peace in their hearts and confident of God’s sovereign control in overcoming this sin-broken world for His glory.
