New clinic opportunity

Dr. Issaka Poudiougo and his wife, Marie, are hoping to build a clinic of their own in the Mulslim-dominated region of Kaniaka.

Imagine this: You are a medical doctor with special training in ultrasound evaluations. You also have master’s degrees in theology, missiology, and international law. On top of this, you are a skilled musician and have recorded four albums. Where would you work? With these credentials, you could work anywhere in the world for a lucrative salary.

But that’s not what Dr. Issaka Poudiougo of Kaniaka, Mali, chose to do. Rather than settling into a comfortable life, he followed God’s call, using his skills in an isolated area of Mali on the border of Mauritania — a region known for its strong Islamic culture and open hostility toward Christians.

Over the past three years Issaka’s gentle spirit and loving service has softened most of the opposition towards him. In fact, village leaders in Kaniaka are urging him to consider a clinic of his own.

Issaka and his wife, Marie, have both made sacrifices to build this ministry. Marie has been living in Bamako, several hundred miles from Kaniaka to receive training in midwifery. She will soon take her final exams, allowing her to finally join her husband in the ministry. She will have unique opportunities to speak with female Muslim patients and share her faith.

However, not everyone in Kaniaka is supportive. Learning that Issaka is a follower of Jesus, his landlord is now threatening to use most of the clinic space to house relatives which would make it legally impossible to continue clinic activities in the building.

We see all of these events as God’s perfect timing. In faith, Issaka recently used his limited personal resources to purchase a plot of land, hoping to one day build a clinic. Constructing a clinic now will give Issaka the added space he needs for his growing ministry and enable Marie to provide obstetrical services.
