Tale of two doctors

By Steve Sartori

In the 1950’s, in a rural community in the United States, a baby boy was born. The nation was free, and under the leadership of Dwight Eisenhower. His father was a local businessman and the mayor of his small town.

The young man excelled academically, and went to medical school. During medical school, he met the girl of his dreams and they were married a few months later. A few years later, in October, 1983, they were blessed with a daughter.

In the 1950’s, in a rural community in Romania, a baby boy was born. The nation was communist, and under the leadership of Nicolae Ceausescu. His father was a local businessman and the mayor of his small town.

This young man excelled academically, and went to medical school. During medical school, he met the girl of his dreams and they were married a few months later. A few years later, in October, 1983, they were blessed with a daughter.

The American doctor, when he heard the Gospel at the age of 16, received it with joy, and committed his life to Jesus. The Romanian doctor, when he heard the Gospel at the age of 36 after the fall of communism, received it with joy, and committed his life to Jesus.

Both doctors shared a vision of medicine as ministry, seeking to touch lives in Jesus’ name through health care.

These two very similar, yet very different doctors – Dr. Steve Sartori and Dr. Augustin Batis – were introduced to each other in 1992 by Dr. Peter Boelens, then-executive director of the Luke Society.

Other members were added to the Partnership Ministry Team, and the Dr. Luca Medical Center was birthed.

The multispecialty clinic grew to almost 100,000 annual patient visits and developed a reputation for not only competent and compassionate medical care, but also for employee satisfaction and business integrity.

Over the years, differences in culture and language became less formidable. Wives became friends, daughters became friends, and the relationships deepened. The couples worked together, planned together, prayed together, studied Scripture together, and traveled together. With the use of modern technology, the two doctors encouraged one another and prayed together on a regular basis.

After 24 years of ministry, the Dr. Luca Medical Center has now been sold, but the relationships endure.

The two doctors continue to talk together and pray together regularly, and Drs. Steve Sartori and Augustin Batis are experiencing the joy of a deep and lasting friendship that started 24 years ago through the ministry of The Luke Society.

Thanks be to God for The Luke Society!
