Leadership transition in Jalapa

By Dan Breen

The new year has brought some significant changes to one of the Luke Society ministries.

On Jan. 1, Miriam Cruz took over as the new director of Vida en Abundancia de Mexico in Jalapa. She replaces Dr. Jose Luis Guerrero who retired as ministry director at the end of 2017.

Guerrero, who has also been the regional coordinator for Central America and the Caribbean countries since 2006, will continue in that role while taking on additional duties as the regional coordinator for the South American ministries.

Cruz has a long history with VAM. Her primary focus has been in nutrition where she has been active in VAM’s soup kitchen program which provides two healthy meals per day to children at three different locations in and around Jalapa. She also meets for consultations with patients.

Cruz was selected for the position by the local VAM Board of Directors.

Guerrero founded VAM in 1999 and it has been a Luke Society-supported ministry since 2002.

What started out as a street outreach to at-risk children has grown into a ministry which occupies a three-level building. The building is comprised of rooms for a health clinic, education room, skills training center, nutrition services and Bible studies. Several years ago a church was formed and uses the facility for Sunday worship.

Please pray for this ministry as it goes through a time of transition. Pray especially fervently for Miriam Cruz and Jose Luis Guerrero as they take on new responsibilities.
